Montecristo

Montecristo is the best known and probably the most appreciated brand of Havanas throughout the world. It forms the benchmark for many Havana smokers against which other brands are judged.

The name comes from Alexandre Dumas’ famous novel ‘The Count of Montecristo’, which was a firm favourite when read by the Lector to the Torcedores (cigar rollers) at the factory where it was founded in 1935.

The original Montecristo range of sizes was composed of a narrow assortment numbered from 1 to 5. Today it consists of a wide variety of vitolas to cover every level of the cigar enthusiast’s needs. In 2004 the 52  ring gauge Edmundo size was introduced in recognition of the trend for heavy gauge sizes, and a shorter version, the Petit Edmundo, followed two years later. 2013 saw the release of the Double Edmundo. Why Edmundo? It is the first name of Edmundo Dantes,  the hero of Dumas’ novel.

2009 saw the introduction of a new Series, Montecristo Open, consisting of four sizes blended to a lighter flavour than other sizes in Montecristo’s range and aimed at a new generation of smokers, who enjoy the pleasures of outdoor pursuits.

Montecristo’s perfectly balanced blends are created exclusively with selected filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo zone, home of the finest tobaccos in the world. Both its original medium to full taste and the lighter flavour found in the Open Series offer a distinguished aroma and appeal equally to new and experienced smokers.

All sizes are Tripa larga, Totalmente a Mano – long filler, totally hand made.

Flavour:
Medium to Full
Open Series – Medium

ESPECIAL

VITOLA: Laguito No.1
RING GAUGE: 38
LENGTH: 7 1/2 inches

ESPECIAL No.2

VITOLA: Laguito No.2
RING GAUGE: 38
LENGTH: 6 inches
Another vitola that Montecristo shares with Cohiba. Slender ring gauges may not be in vogue these days, but 38 is sufficient to house the full Montecristo blend in a dapper shape.

EDMUNDO

VITOLA: Edmundo
RING GAUGE: 52
LENGTH: 5 1/3 inches
Named after Alexandre Dumas’ hero Edmundo Dantes  in
‘The Count of Montecristo’, the Edmundo was one of the first extra heavy gauge, parejo sizes produced in Cuba in the  21st  century. Big and rewarding.

PETIT EDMUNDO

VITOLA: Petit Edmundo
RING GAUGE: 52
LENGTH: 4 3/8 inches
Edmundo’s little brother blessedly burst onto the scene just ahead of the smoking ban, so that devotees of heavy gauge, intense flavoured cigars had a shorter alternative.

No.1

VITOLA:  Cervantes
RING GAUGE: 42
LENGTH: 6 1/2 inches
The lead size of Montecristo when it was initiated in 1935.The standard bearer for the medium to full, tangy taste that conquered the world. A treasure for the cognoscenti of Havana cigars.

No.2

VITOLA: Pirámide
RING GAUGE: 52
LENGTH: 6 1/8 inches
If ever one brand has come to dominate a particular vitola, this is it. The classic Pirámide or ‘torpedo’ size. Easy burning with a controlled release of faithful Montecristo flavours, many devotees look no further than this.

No.3

VITOLA: Corona
RING GAUGE: 42
LENGTH: 5 5/8 inches
Another of the original Montecristos; this one a Corona. From start to finish it maintains the true taste of this brand.

No.4

VITOLA: Mareva
RING GAUGE: 42
LENGTH: 5 1/8 inches
Simply the most popular individual handmade cigar in the  world. Its rich, tangy, medium to full flavour acts as the benchmark for most smokers embarking on the journey to find their preferred Habano. Many return to it.

RING GAUGE: 50
LENGTH: 6 1/8 inches
2013’s new addition to  the Edmundo range is a Doble, nearly an inch (20 mm) longer than the original Edmundo and slightly slimmer. It is elegantly dressed in the new band that will eventually appear on all Montecristo  sizes.

PETIT No.2

VITOLA: Petit No. 2
RING GAUGE: 52
LENGTH: 4 3/4 inches
All the medium to full character of the classic No.2 in a shorter smoke. A welcome additon  to Montecristo’s line-up, which is also dressed in the new band.

JOYITA

VITOLA: Laguito No.3
RING GAUGE: 26
LENGTH: 4 1/2 inches
The third size that Montecristo has shared  with  Cohiba  since 1971. A short, intense sip of Montecristo’s famous blend of  tobaccos.

MEDIA CORONA

VITOLA: Half Corona
RING GAUGE: 44
LENGTH: 3 1/2 inches
Medias Corona literally translates as “Half Corona” and the size was first introduced in the UK back in 1907 by an English cigar importer who wanted to stop keeping his wife waiting for him at the theatre while he enjoyed the last of his Corona sized cigar.
However, from one man’s requirements the cigar quickly went on to become the most popular vitolas (sizes) in the market during the 1920s and 1930s. At one point it is estimated that the Half Corona, across various brands, accounted for one in every thirty Havana cigars sold in the UK. However, as tastes changed the format eventually faded from popularity until it was entirely discontinued.
That was until H. Upmann decided to revisit this long forgotten size and, giving it a slightly modern dusting down – it now bears a more modern, stout 44 ring gauge as opposed to the traditional 42 – relaunched it in 2011. The cigar is the shortest of the of the long filler handrolled cigars and is proving to be a very popular size because of the wide ringe gauge.

MONTECRISTO - OPEN SERIES

2009 saw the introduction of a new Series, Montecristo Open, consisting of four sizes blended to a lighter flavour than other sizes in Montecristo’s range and aimed at a new generation of smokers, who enjoy the pleasures of outdoor pursuits. Medium flavour.

OPEN EAGLE

VITOLA: Geniales
RING GAUGE: 54
LENGTH: 5 7/8 inches

OPEN REGATA

VITOLA: Forum
RING GAUGE: 46
LENGTH: 5 3/8 inches
A completely new figurado shape made in the image of the famous No.2, but shorter and thinner. All the smoking characteristics of its big brother are preserved in a lighter flavoured, less time consuming size.

OPEN MASTER

VITOLA: Robusto
RING GAUGE: 50
LENGTH: 4 7/8 inches
The Open Series made way, at last, for a Robusto size in Montecristo’s illustrious line-up. A delightful, medium bodied addition in this popular shape sporting the all- important fleur-de-lys on its band.

OPEN JUNIOR

VITOLA: Trabuco
RING GAUGE: 38
LENGTH: 4 3/8 inches
The smallest of  the  Open Series. The Junior takes the form of a rare vitola previously only found in the Le  Hoyo  Series (du  Deputé). A perfect morning or aperitif smoke.
