Montecristo
Montecristo is the best known and probably the most appreciated brand of Havanas throughout the world. It forms the benchmark for many Havana smokers against which other brands are judged.
The name comes from Alexandre Dumas’ famous novel ‘The Count of Montecristo’, which was a firm favourite when read by the Lector to the Torcedores (cigar rollers) at the factory where it was founded in 1935.
The original Montecristo range of sizes was composed of a narrow assortment numbered from 1 to 5. Today it consists of a wide variety of vitolas to cover every level of the cigar enthusiast’s needs. In 2004 the 52 ring gauge Edmundo size was introduced in recognition of the trend for heavy gauge sizes, and a shorter version, the Petit Edmundo, followed two years later. 2013 saw the release of the Double Edmundo. Why Edmundo? It is the first name of Edmundo Dantes, the hero of Dumas’ novel.
2009 saw the introduction of a new Series, Montecristo Open, consisting of four sizes blended to a lighter flavour than other sizes in Montecristo’s range and aimed at a new generation of smokers, who enjoy the pleasures of outdoor pursuits.
Montecristo’s perfectly balanced blends are created exclusively with selected filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo zone, home of the finest tobaccos in the world. Both its original medium to full taste and the lighter flavour found in the Open Series offer a distinguished aroma and appeal equally to new and experienced smokers.
All sizes are Tripa larga, Totalmente a Mano – long filler, totally hand made.

MEDIA CORONA
VITOLA: Half Corona
RING GAUGE: 44

Medias Corona literally translates as “Half Corona” and the size was first introduced in the UK back in 1907 by an English cigar importer who wanted to stop keeping his wife waiting for him at the theatre while he enjoyed the last of his Corona sized cigar.
However, from one man’s requirements the cigar quickly went on to become the most popular vitolas (sizes) in the market during the 1920s and 1930s. At one point it is estimated that the Half Corona, across various brands, accounted for one in every thirty Havana cigars sold in the UK. However, as tastes changed the format eventually faded from popularity until it was entirely discontinued.
That was until H. Upmann decided to revisit this long forgotten size and, giving it a slightly modern dusting down – it now bears a more modern, stout 44 ring gauge as opposed to the traditional 42 – relaunched it in 2011. The cigar is the shortest of the of the long filler handrolled cigars and is proving to be a very popular size because of the wide ringe gauge.
